TEAM SPIRIT - Part 3 Continued
In his office, Mr Monroe's getting impatient. Rosie comes in, and he wants to get on with it.
"Actually, sir," Rosie stops him. "I've decided not to go ahead with the grievance."
June's surprised. "Rosie, this afternoon you made an allegation of sexual assault. Are you now saying you want to drop the whole thing?"
"Yes, Sarge."
June's suspicious of her sudden change of heart. "This wasn't an easy decision for you to make at the time, but you seemed very certain. Now, what's changed?"
"I've thought it through some more."
"And there isn't anything or anyone that's influenced your decision on it?"
"No, Sarge, I just thought better of it."
Mr Monroe reprimands her for wasting their time and the standard of her work lately. He clearly thinks that the allegation was false. "So can we expect to see you back at work tomorrow?" asks June.
"Yes, Sarge, I just want to get back to normal as quickly as possible." Andrew's not convinced, and June doesn't believe her that noone helped her with her decision.
Dave's the centre of attention in the men's locker-room. "Is it true?" asks Tony.
"What?"
"Rosie's dropped her grievance," clarifies George.
"Yeah."
"Ed will be happy," comments Reg.
"Ecstatic!" answers Dave. "Good new all round, then!"
"Well, what about Rosie, though? Have you spoken to her?" asks Luke.
"Yeah, she's coming down the pub later."
"What's she coming down the pub for?" asks Tony. "She's hardly going to get the red carpet treatment!"
Dave sticks up for her. "Look, she and Eddie have sorted it all out, so there's no reason to keep on giving her a hard time, is there?"
Dave goes to leave. "How did they sort it out?" questions Luke.
"Let's just call it a negotiated settlement."
"What, with you as the negotiator?" Gary asks him.
"Yeah."
"So come on then, cough. What do you know that we don't?"
"Nothing, Tone. I'll see you down there."
Sgt. Boyden's waiting for someone outside the pub, but they're probably late.
Across the road, Rosie and Liz walk up to the pub.
"Do you really think this will work, trusting Dave to be Team Policeman?" Rosie asks her friend's opinion.
"I don't know, Rosie, but there's only one way to find out!" Boyden watches them go in.
Inside, Liz and Rosie go straight over to meet Dave. "You made it then," he says. I think he thought she changed her mind.
"This far. What do we do now?"
"Come with me." They go over to Eddie, who's having a laugh with Tony and George. He agrees to get the next round in, as Dave said, but not without a drunken remark, which he does sort of apologise for.
"What's going on?" George asks Liz.
"I'll tell you later."
"So you sorted things out with Eddie then?" Polly asks acting more friendly now.
"Yeah, I agree to differ and just get on with it." Rosie's invited to join the crowd, but it's not very relaxed.
"What shall we talk about then?" asks Tony. They've spent so much time discussing Eddie and Rosie's private lives that they can't think of any other topics.
Clive Tarrant turns up. He was probably who Matt was waiting for. George spots him. "Aye, Aye. Looks like the press is here." Tarrant goes over to June and Jamilla.
"Hello June."
"Clive. This isn't your regular is it?" she asks.
"No. I just thought I'd pop in. Nice to see you all relaxing after a tough day."
June sees Matt and goes over for a quick word. "I wanted to hear what you know about Rosie's change of heart. In fact, I'd appreciate you filling me in on this whole situation since you're obviously someone with inside information."
"You've got me wrong, June. It's a mystery to me."
"Not good enough, Matt."
"I'm going to get a drink."
"No, don't you try and brush me off! Now, I may never work out exactly how you fit into this whole mess…"
"I don't fit in anywhere."
"I think you have gone way over the line as a supervising officer. Now I just hope that your professional conscience is clear, because I'm warning you, from where I'm standing, you've got an awful lot of work of to do filter it clean."
"You finished?"
"No." She indicates Tarrant. "What's Clive Tarrant doing here? Is he here looking for you?"
"I've no idea. Ask him!"
"Rosie may have dropped her grievance about Eddie, but as far as I'm concerned there's still a whole lot of reasonable doubt about who's innocent here, and who's implicated!" June walks off. Matt goes over to the bar and is promptly joined by Tarrant.
"What's going on?" the journalist asks.
"Nothing."
"We had a deal, Matt!"
"Yeah, well, the deal's off. She's dropped the complaint."
"Right!" Tarrant puts down his drink. "I'll leave you to celebrate!"
Liz goes over to sit with Rosie. "Not exactly relaxed, is it?" Rosie remarks.
"It'll get better."
"I'm really sorry, Liz. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you sticking by me."
"That's alright."
Dave joins them and sits down. "So everything alright then?"
"Yes," answers Liz. "At least Eddie's behaving himself!" She nods towards Ed who's had a bit too much to drink!
"Why don't I feel reassured by that," Rosie says sarcastically.
"We're fine, me and Rosebud, we're sorted," Ed's telling the others. "Best of friends! I'll tell you what though…"
"That's your fifth pint, isn't it Ed?" Polly interrupts him.
"No listen, I reckon she could be right over the other way!"
"What?" asks Vicky.
"A dyke! It makes sense." George thinks it's funny.
"Don't be pathetic, Eddie!" she tells him.
Dave overhears this is drags Eddie away for a quiet reminder if the terms of the deal. "You're not playing the game, Eddie!"
"Yes, I am."
"No, you're not. The rules include no badmouthing; no jokes at Rosie's expense and no mischief." He suggests that Ed goes and talks to her.
"I've talked to her; I've bought her a drink and that's enough for now."
"It's enough when I say it's enough."
"When do you stop acting as the moral majority and just get on with your life?"
"When I decide that you can be trusted, which could be for a very long time."
"I don't need you as my big brother." A fight ensues. Boyden tries to restrain Ed, while George ineffectively tries to stop Dave. In the end Tony and George grab Dave, who has a nosebleed, and Sam and Luke hold Ed while June Ackland stands in the middle. Rosie and Liz watch from a distance.
"What's going on here?" she demands.
"I don't know what to tell you," says Ed.
"I'll tell you what's been going on here, Sarge!" yells Dave. "Eddie's a liar! He's lied to everybody here about Rosie! . He's lied to everybody here about his past! I saw you up on the roof of that warehouse! You were exactly where Rosie said you were! And this isn't the first time he's played some crazy game with a woman he works with!"
"He's right off on his own little planet!" Ed tries to lie.
"No, Eddie! It won't work! You're the only nutter round here!"
"Dave, you're talking crap, man!"
"Shut up, Eddie! We swallowed enough bull from you already!" He tells George and Tony to let go of him now he's calmed down. "You listen to me, I'm going to be watching you, waiting for you to prove that you're not the total piece of scum that I think you are! And I advise everybody here to do the same."
Dave walks out. George begins to follow. Rosie grabs her bag. "I'd like to go, Liz."
"You alright, Rosie?" June asks.
"Yeah, I just…I just want to go home, Sarge."
"Off you go."
The next day, Rosie's sitting down thinking at home. Her uniform's out: she's just finished ironing. The phone begins to ring next to her. She waits for the answerphone message to end, but whoever it was doesn't leave a message. She picks up the phone.
Ed sees the rest of the relief in the yard, but following last nights' events, they're not even speaking to him.
"Do you think Eddie really assaulted her?" Polly asks Tony.
"No way of knowing, unless she makes another allegation."
"I just can't believe that he took us all for suckers like that," says George.
"Neither would I if it was anyone but Dave."
Liz stops Polly. "Have you seen Rosie?"
"No I didn't see her come in Liz." Liz continues on down the corridor. "She's probably had enough of all us lot!"
"Would you blame her," says Tony.
Liz goes round to Rosie's house to check on her. "I thought you'd be back at work today, Rosie." They go into the kitchen.
"Coffee?"
"Yeah, white, no sugar."
"I'm not going back, Liz."
"What? What are you talking?"
"I'm applying for a transfer. I've just called in to let them know."
Liz sighs. "Oh, why Rosie? After everything you've been through."
"What happened in the pub last night…"
"Eddie deserved what happened in the pub last night! And it's going to make your life a lot easier."
Rosie's not convinced. "Will it?"
"You're seriously going to walk away from this now you've won?"
"It doesn't feel like winning, Liz! It feels like I never really stood a chance. From day one I wasn't in with the rest of the team."
"Well now you'll have time!"
"I caused so much aggravation down there, if I go back now I'm going to have to start all over again anyway. Knocking on doors to see if people will let me in, and not everyone's going to forgive me, Liz."
"It's Eddie that caused all this trouble, not you. He should be the one who pays for it."
"I assume he will one way or another, whether I'm around or not. Listen, I'm glad the truth came out - or some of it, but if I've got to roll the stone right back up the hill again I think I'd much rather do it without Eddie or Sgt. Boyden breathing down my neck."
"But you'll be protected from all that," Liz tries to persuade her.
"Maybe."
"It's a real shame, Rosie."
"Yes, it is."
June's briefing the relief. Ed's been put out on the Outcast Beat. "Before you go, I want everyone to know that Rosie Fox won't be coming back to work. She's decided to put in for an immediate transfer and she'll be taking leave until it's all sorted out. But that isn't all I've got to say about this. Rosie is an officer who came to Sunhill with a good record, who may or may not have been victimised by some members of this team. Now I personally am very disappointed to discover that over the last couple of weeks Rosie's problems have been ignored, or even worse increased, by the attitude that's been taken to her.
Now everyone, and believe me, I don't exclude myself from this, bears part of the blame for what happened here. So I suggest that we all go away and think about what lessons we can learn from this and I just hope that I never have to deal with anything like it again.
Alright, off you go."
