BANG, BANG, YOU'RE DEAD : Part 1 Continued
Rosie's off ill. The telephone rings and she comes inside from the garden, but doesn't answer it. At first she thinks it might be Eddie again. It turns out to be her mother wanting to know how she's getting on at Sunhill.
Meanwhile Eddie and Tony are dragging a violent prisoner into a cell. Eddie was bit, but Matthew Boyden's hardly sympathetic.
"I noticed you stayed well clear Sarge!"
"I could see you had it under control. Anyway, in ten minutes time he's the late turns problem."
"Then you can get it out of your system; on the battlefield," enthuses Tony.
"Keep your eyes peeled Sarge. You're on my hit list now."
"Dream on Rambo!"
Gary and Vicky rush in with a prisoner who's about to throw up. "Great day for your girlfriend to leave us short handed," Vicky remarks to Ed.
"She's not my girlfriend remember. I pulled out of that nosedive."
Tony comes up behind Vicky. "She's probably pining: because you dumped her."
"Either that or she's having another cozy chat with the Stafford Roe fed rep. What do you reckon that's all about? It's put George's nose right out of joint."
"Beats me. You'll have to ask her that, but could you believe what she tells you? I don't think I could anymore."
Liz knocks on the door to the DI's office. She asks whether he wants to make a donation to the Paintball Charity Event. If the ranks win the money goes to a Drug Rehabilitation Project and if the Guvnors win it's the National Holiday Fund for Disabled Children. Deakin donates £10. "Let's do something for the children!"
Rosie's arrived. Jamilla's surprised to see her. "I feeling better." She also gets a reprimand from Sgt. Cryer for not being well enough to work, but coming in for the paintballing. She tells him that she thinks it's important that she makes the event. "Since I got here I've been attached to CID and I just don't feel like part of the relief somehow. I thought this might be a chance to build some bridges."
Cryer tells her to make sure she's here tomorrow. "Migraine or no migraine."
By the coffee-machine, Polly's enthusiastic that Rosie's coming along. George just stays silent, and as they leave Eddie arrives.
"Look who it is: the part-timer!"
"Don't come to my house again!"
"Why what're you gonna do? Tell the Fed Rep about me? Oh no, you've already done that!"
"Look, Ed, I know what you think..." she begins, I think to tell him that she's not taking any further action, but he doesn't want to listen.
"To be honest, I don't give a stuff anymore. You've crossed the line with me, Rosebud. You've blown it, big time!" He walks off.
Liz comes down the stairs. "Rosie, who's taking the sponsorship pledges?"
"Eddie or Dave, I think. They arranged it."
"Well, there's £80 and promises from CID." She hands it to Rosie.
"Thanks." She's a bit distracted.
"Well you look fighting-fit. What's the problem?"
"Half the relief think I'm a stuck-up, duplicited cow, but apart from that it's just great!"
Liz's shocked. "Do they? Why?"
"I don't know. It's a long story," Rosie sighs. "And Eddie Santini's got his version."
"Where are they going for a drink after?"
"The Grapes."
"Tell you what, I'll meet you there. We'll find a nice quiet corner and you can tell me all about it."
Rosie's not so sure. "I not sure that's such a good idea. I want to get on with these people, not isolate myself even further."
"Hey, I am one of these people!" Liz points out. "I'll see you later, alright?" Rosie nods.
The relief is out in the yard preparing to get on the mini-bus.
"Now then troops, ready to do battle?" calls out DCI Jack Meadows.
"Ready as we'll ever be, Sir," answers June.
"We'll really looking forward to this," says Tony. "Aren't we, Luke?"
"Yeah!"
"Oh, I'm really scared!" June says sarcastically.
Jack walks off laughing and passes Matt Boyden along with another crowd of uniform in their civvies. "Crazy! You'll all get slaughtered!"
"Not by this lot!" Matt answers.
Chief Inspector Derek Conway comes out. "Not you aswell, Derek!"
"Why? What's the problem?"
"Aren't you a bit long in the tooth to be playing soldiers?"
"I'm looking forward to it as it happens."
"Very commendable."
Rosie walks out past Don Beech who's drawing up the betting odds for the result on the game. She hands Ed the money from CID. He grabs her arm but she shakes him off.
Inspector Andrew Monroe calls Dave over. "Did you sort out some volunteers to make our numbers up?"
"No, Sir. I didn't."
"Well why not? I specifically asked you to organise it. We're outnumbered 4-1."
"Well, I asked around, but nobody wanted to be on the losing side, Sir."
"Alright," calls out Bob. "I want half a dozen volunteers to make up our team. Anyone?" Ed pushes Rosie forward. "Rosie, you with us?"
"Sarge!" She walks over to join them.
"Anyone else?" Nobody comes forward so Bob randomly selects George, Gary, Reg and some others.
"We're on the A-Team then, George!" Rosie tries to be enthusiastic, but George gives her the cold shoulder.
"If you say so Rosie!"
"Watch your back, George!" Ed jokes as they get on the bus. Ed goes behind Rosie and touches her on the bottom as she climbs up. She half-heartedly hits him with her rucksack. "Just bringing up the rear!"
"Wait for the mini-bus," Conway tells Andrew. "Best if we travel in convoy." He gets in the car. "I hope you don't mind me mentioning this, Andrew, but I thought it best if I assume command of the battle, don't you?"
"I suppose so. I hadn't thought about it, Sir."
"Well I am Chief Inspector Ops. It does make sense. What do the others think?"
"Nobody's mentioned it to me. I shouldn't think they'd object." Andrew hesitates. "Do we need a leader?"
"Of course we need a leader," Conway tells him in a matter-of-fact tone. "We've got to have a strategy. It'd be chaos otherwise. Well you can do it if you want."
"No, I really don't mind, Sir. It's only a game."
"What kind of attitude's that? We're supposed to be setting an example. It may only be a game, but we've got to play to win."
"Yes, Sir. I suppose you're right."
"I am right! There'd be no point playing otherwise," Derek mutters.
Don Beech is handling all the bets in CID. It's 3-1 that the Guvnors will win. Ranks are even money favourites. He worked it out on average age. John Boulton argues that the ranks are carrying more of the women. "You know what girlies are like. Once the muck and bullets start flying, and the mascara starts running…My money's on the Guvnors."
Tom and Jim haven't got the time or money to put on a bet, as Tom rushes out of the office.
"What a tightwad!" remarks Don.
At the paintball facilities, everyone's getting ready. Some of the supervisors are handing out coloured bands to distinguish between the two teams. Luke Ashton's not bothering to change into some overalls. "I don't care if these ones get dirty. I've got some clean ones in my bag."
"You'll regret it!"
At the other end of the area, the Guvnors are getting ready. Rosie's still being given the cold-shoulder by George. "Pick up your guns, masks and ammo on the way to the combat zone!" they're all told.
"I won't have to do that!" proudly declares Conway. He brandishes a paintball gun which he brought with him.
"What's that?" asks Andrew.
"This, Andrew, is the Auto-Mag RT." He goes onto describe its firepower, etc. Conway's clearly looking forward to the match.
"Where did you get it?"
"From my nephew."
"And how old's he?"
"Twelve."
Matt Boyden interrupts them, asking them to pick a card. The troops wanted a democratic way to elect a leader: the highest card wins. They've got to beat the jack.. Conway reluctantly agrees.
"Eight," Andrew declares.
"Four." Conway's disappointed, but the worst bit is that Reg picked the jack! The Ranks can't help but laugh.
The two teams are being briefed on the rules. They have to capture the opposite teams flag and get it back to their base. "There will be no headshots, no hand-to-hand combat!"
"He fancies himself!" Conway remarks as the supervisor passes them.
"If you are hit you will raise your right arm and retire to the Dead Zone immediately, and take no further part in the battle." Rosie's uncomfortable as she's aware that Ed's watching her. "In the event of any dispute, my decision is final!"
They're all sent over to the practice zone, when Ed shoots at Rosie's feet. The supervisor warns him to behave, but the others think that it's just a joke. As they walk off Ed mimes shooting a gun at her. Rosie's not impressed!
The teams have set up to reach their bases. Conway and Monroe are having problems keeping up, as June Ackland rushes past them and urges them to hurry up.
Dave, who's leader of the Ranks, is giving a team-talk and planning their strategy. They're in yellow, the Guvnors are red. The original plan is that Dave, Tony and Luke will attack first, followed by Eddie, Vicky, and some others will follow. Vicky's too enthusiastic and begs to Dave to let her go in the first group. He agrees to swap with her. Sam, Jamilla, Polly and Debbie are going down the flanks.
At the Guvnor's base, Bob Cryer hands something to Reg before dashing off. Conway approaches Reg, "Hollis, where's everybody going?"
"I've sent an advance party to operate behind enemy lines. A covert force, like the SAS."
Conway disagrees about the strategy. "It's cheating for one thing. The whistle hasn't gone."
"All's fair in love and war, Sir."
"And another thing," Conway yells. "As everybody knows, an invading force needs vastly superior numbers to succeed! All we have to do is dig in here and wait! You've weakened our position!"
"I disagree, Sir. I've always thought that the best form of defense was attack. Gary and I are going to stay here and guard this flag." He taps the flagpole with his gun." He sends Rosie off to go forward with George. "Stay undercover." He then tells Conway to go with Andrew and take up sniper positions. Conway begins to protest. "Sir, I'm in command here now! I'd like you to go and take up those positions, please!"
"Hollis, you're an idiot!" Monroe intervenes before they begin to waste too much time, and accidentally calls Reg "Sir", which gets up Conway's nose even more.
The Ranks are waiting for the whistle. Most of them are yelling battle-cries as they run off.
Conway's still fuming about Reg's leadership. "This is what comes of mixing officers with ranks!" Monroe abandons him to take up position.
"We'll have to make the most of it...Good luck!"
"Come on, then! Then lets have you!" Conway mutters as he starts to aim.
Polly crosses an open space, before signaling to Debbie, Polly, Luke and Tony that's it's all clear. "Get across and cover us!" Vicky tells Luke, nudging him along.
Bob Cryer's hiding in the bushes and watches Vicky and Tony run off. Sam and Jamilla hear a noise, but nobody notices him as they pass. The noise turns out to be a radio. Bob quietly uses his to contact Reg when he's alone again. "There's three coming down the centre. Two groups of two on either flank. The rest are coming as backup."
"Understood, Sarge. Keep me informed."
"Will do."
"Reg. I'm impressed!" Gary compliments Reg at the base.
"Yeah, well, look, Dave and Eddie think that it's going to be a bit of a walkover, but I'm telling you, nobody's getting that flag without a fight." Reg begins to clean his goggles. "Oh and, Gary, if there's any confusion in the heat of the battle, take your orders from me, alright?"
"Yes Reg. You're the boss."
"You should have put some overalls on, Luke. These paintballs can really hurt at close range," Tony tells him.
"Great! You should have told me that before!"
"I didn't want to worry you." Vicky silences them and runs off when she hears a sound. Suddenly the area is filled with smoke. Someone in a motorcycle helmet with the word "TERMINATOR" on appears and starts shooting. Luke runs off, but Tony gets shot at the very bottom of his back and falls to his knees.
The Terminator disappears into the bushes chasing Luke. Eddie comes to check on Tony. "You alright?"
"No, I'm dead!"
"Who the hell was that?"
"Dunno, but get him for me!" Eddie and Dave chase after the mysterious gunman.
Eddie and Dave are using a log to protect themselves whilst shooting at George, Rosie and June. Suddenly a Rank runs out, yelling, and throws a smoke bomb into the building where June and Rosie are.
"Who's that? It's Vicky!" They begin yelling encouragement.
"Rosie, see if you can get round behind them!" June tells her. Rosie dashes off into the bushes trying to find some cover. Ed spots her and chases after her, despite Dave telling him not to. The game is paused there, to allow Tony to walk through.
"I see the firearms training cam in handy then Tone!" laughs George as he shoots him.
"I'm dead! I'm dead!" yells Tony.
"Yeah, you are now!" George laughs again and shoots him in the groin.
The game is restarted. Dave, Eddie and two others are making their way to a barrier. Cryer radios Reg to let him know, but Sam and Jamilla hear the radio.
"Sarge!"
"Terrific!" Bob sighs.
"Do you want to surrender?" asks Sam.
"I suppose so."
"Tough," smile Jamilla as they shoot him in the chest.
"Get back to the dead zone. Get yourself a cup of coffee!"
"After you." They turn around just as the Terminator appears and quickly shoots them both.
Rosie's carefully walking through an open space in the woods, but fails to notice that Eddie's quietly following her.
"You team's taking quite a hammering," Bob comments to Tony.
"Not looking good, is it?"
Behind them Sam and Jamilla are trying to clean the paint off. "Alright, Sarge?" asks Jamilla.
"Who got you two?" Tony asks them.
"Someone called the Terminator."
"Yeah, me aswell. Who is it?"
Conway can't tell what's going on due to the smoke-bombs, as Vicky and Dave and someone else (I think it's Eddie) continue shooting at them. "I haven't fired a shot yet.!" He gets fed-up and goes across to help George. The Ranks retreat, but Conway manages to hit one.
Ed hides behind a tree slightly out of breath. He watches Rosie and is about to shoot her when he has a better idea. He picks up a bit of wood and throws it into the bushes in front of her. Startled, she backs up towards him. He jumps out behind her and makes her jump, before grabbing her and pushing her to the floor. The Terminator expertly shoots them both.
She tries to fight Ed off, but he only stops when one of the supervisors catch them and tells them that they're both dead.
Rosie shoves Eddie and storms off. "No wonder she's pissed off. She's been killed by one of her own team," comments the supervisor.
"Yeah, it isn't fair. I wanted to do it!" Ed tells him, before following her.
Vicky Hagen's firing at Andrew Monroe from a small hut. Conway comes to back him up. Reg and Gary shoot at her from the base. Reg signals to Gary to go off to one side. "Sir, cover you own positions!" Reg shouts. Conway points towards Vicky. "I know! Cover the other flanks!"
"Idiot!"
Just then, the whistle goes. "Dad man coming through!" yells the supervisor. This time, Eddie and Rosie walk through.
"Been for a walk in the woods?" jokes Dave.
"She was killed by friendly fire!" Ed answers.
The game resumes, as Gary comes to help Conway and Monroe. Conway begins giving orders, despite Reg's instructions. Gary ends up confused and almost falls over when trying to avoid being hit. Finally someone shoots Vicky.
Ed and Rosie are still on their way to the Dead Zone when they pass Tom Proctor on his mobile. He's letting Jim Carver know how the games progressing. "The Ranks are dropping like flies, mate." Back at the office, Jim calls over to Don and quickly bets £10 on the Guvnors.
Dave and George are shooting at each other. George actually hits Dave, who quickly covers the paint in dirt and denies being shot at all. One of the supervisors pauses the game to check.
"It's just on his shoulder, Guvnor!" says George.
"You're dead, soldier!" He sends Dave off to the Dead Zone.
"Go on, Dave! Get out of it!"
Polly and Debbie decide to take out the snipers. They get out their smoke-bombs.
Meanwhile, Luke's crawling up behind a tree. "Sir!" he yells, to get Andrew Monroe's attention, before shooting him and George. Conway comes forward to attack Luke, who stays low for cover.
Polly and Debbie run up with their smoke-bombs and throw them at Conway. "Reg! Cover me! I'm coming in!"
"No! Stick to your position!"
"Reg, we're being flanked here!"
Back at the Dead Zone, Rosie's sitting by herself. Vicky brings Eddie some tea, but he tells her that Dave's getting him a cola. "Is he? I wouldn't have done. You left him for dead out there," she laughs.
"Well, I went on a Fox Hunt, didn't I. Big mistake! Maybe I should take this over, eh?" he suggests.
"Up to you."
Ed goes across to Rosie. "Hello Chuckles, mind if I join you?" he says quietly.
"Yes! Go!" He sits down anyway.
"Boy do you know how to have a good time." He offers her the tea and pretends to accidentally spill it over her.
Not surprisingly, she loses her temper. "Get away from me!...You can't treat me like this! Leave me alone!" she adds more quietly.
Ed gets up dramatically and uses the situation to his advantage. "For God sake, Rosie. I never wanted to hurt you," he says loud enough for the others to hear. "It just didn't work out. I'm sorry it's over. Can't you just accept that?"
Rosie's had enough and ends up lunging for him. "You crazy, evil bastard!" she yells. Dave pulls her off. "What are you all staring at?" She storms off again.
"Rosie!" Jamilla tries to stop her.
"What was all that about?" Dave quietly asks.
"She's taking it worse than I thought," Ed lies.
