Liz, Vicky and Polly are at the mortuary for the results of the post mortem. Vicky tells the pathologist that they've identified the body. They learn that Tracy didn't die from drowning but from a massive heroin overdose. She was carrying condoms full of it in her stomach. One of them burst, possibly due to a fall or a blow to the stomach. It was likely that she was involved in a fight: she had bruises on her arms and neck.

Liz and DI Chris Deakin go to meet her ex-informant, Kim. Kim tells them that someone called Bellman took Tracy off in his car the night before. Liz explains to Chris that Clive Bellman is the owner of hostel on Brim Street.
Rosie and Eddie go into the canteen. Rosie's quickly the centre of attention with her male colleagues.
"You alright Rosie?"
"Hi, Luke."
"How's it going Rosie?" asks George.
"Fine."
"Hi, Rosie," grins Sam.
"Do you want a cup of tea?" offers George. Eddie's not impressed.
|
Dave and Tony take him to one side. "Is it love or what?" asks Tony.
"She thinks a lot of herself," Ed tells them.
"Well wouldn't you," says Dave.
"Is she attached?" Tony sounds keen.
"I haven't asked her yet."
"Rosie," calls Dave. "Eddie's desperate to know if you're available."
"Oh, I thought he's just desperate." Everyone apart from Eddie thinks it's funny.
"I'm not hungry. I'm going to the rec. room."
"Must be love," comments Dave as Eddie leaves.
|
Liz and DI Deakin are off to the hostel to talk to Clive Bellman. It's not exactly an up-market establishment, but Bellman seems very calm and keen to cooperate.
"We're making some inquiries about a girl who was found dead this morning. We think she may have lived locally," begins Chris, handing Bellman a photofit of Keller.
Bellman identifies her immediately. "Yes, Tracy Keller."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, she lives here - only, she did anyway. She went missing, what a week or so ago. Out of the blue."
"No explanation?"
"No."
"Can we have a look in her room, talk to her friends?"
"Sure." Bellman escorts them up the stairs to Tracy's room. "Don't know about friends. Most of the residents keep themselves to themselves."
"Did you know she was a heroin addict?" asks Liz.
He tells them that it was obvious. "A few of the girls here are users."
"And that doesn't bother you?" They follow him into the room.
|
"I do run this place for profit. It doesn't mean I have to be narrow minded about it. How did she die?"
"It looks like suicide," Chris tells him.
"Shame. I'll leave you to it then"
Once Bellman's gone, Liz and Chris discuss his manner.
"He's very relaxed," remarks Chris.
"Yeah, dead cool. What do you reckon?"
"Well, he's either dead straight, or he's up to his neck in it." Chris examines a photo of Keller and a child.
"Well, there's nothing here. Apart from the usual works everything's been cleaned up and put away. Not even a full ashtray."
|
"Maybe someone cleaned up after she'd gone."
"Why? Unless they knew she wasn't coming back." They go back downstairs to talk to Bellman. "Has anyone been in Tracy's room since she left, Mr Bellman; it looks very tidy."
|
Bellman considers this for a second. "No, not as far as I know. She was a particularly tidy junkie." The DI thanks him. The landlord wants to know if he can clear out Tracy's things, as he wants to get a new tenant. Chris just asks him to bundle it up and keep hold of it for now.
"He's up to his neck in it!" comments DI Deakin when they get outside.
Dave's beating George at pool in the rec. room. They ask Ed to play the winner, but he's not in the mood. Dave makes a comment that he's a "changed man since this morning," just as Rosie walks in. She agrees to give them a game after work, which George seems rather surprised and chuffed at. Rosie and Eddie get up to go back out on patrol, when Bob Cryer stops them. Martin Cookson's causing a nuisance again in the Princess Royal Pub.
"Can you get it sorted this time!"
|
"Want do reckon then? Castration? Or should I set fire to myself in the street? Would that satisfy them?" Cookson really must have had a skinful! The landlord's already tried to get him to leave.
Rosie takes the calm and rational approach. "Come on, Mr Cookson, lets take you home." He tells her how Piper's been and got him thrown out of his flat.
Eddie's clearly not sympathetic and takes more direct action. "Alright, mate. Out!" he orders, and grabs Cookson. Outside, Rosie gets Eddie to back off, and gives Cookson a final chance. "That was clever. He deserved to be nicked!"
"He deserves a chance to get on with his life in peace."
"Piper and his family are the ones that deserve some peace."
"Right, then. Let's go and pay Mr Piper and his family a visit."
|
"Not our job, Rosebud!"
"It will be if it ends up with someone getting hurt."
"Haven't you had enough? I'd rather catch villains than do house calls!"
"Alright, drop me off there. I'll talk to the Pipers. You go and hunt down hard-line knicker thieves in the mail!"
|
Liz and the DI are updating DCI Jack Meadows on the Keller case. Chris is certain that Bellman's got to be involved.
"Kim always reckoned that he sold the hostel girls a bit of smack along with their accommodation," explains Liz. "Now, if he's moved up a gear and started using them to courier the heroin, that would fit in with everything we've got so far: Tracy's disappearance and death, her clothes, Kim's information, the hostel girls." Chris tells the DCI that they need to get inside the hostel. Jack asks Bellman's criminal record. "He's a jack of all trades, receiving, fraud. We haven't caught him on anything serious."
"What about your informant? Couldn't she help?" asks Meadows.
"Ex-informant," Liz corrects him. "No I don't think she'd do it. Not on her own, anyway. We need someone inside the hostel."
"Undercover? Well that could be difficult."
"It's too late to call in SO11," says Chris.
"There's a new WPC downstairs," suggests Liz. "I know her. She's a new face a good copper."
"What, the Oxbridge girl with the eyes?" Chris doesn't buy it. "Bellman's lot are all homeless junkies and toms on their days off."
"She's got five years experience in the job," Liz argues.
"She'd need a partner."
"What a girlfriend?"
"Bloke would be better."
"You wasting your time." Ed's still trying to wind Rosie up, as she gets out of the car, and it's working!
"No, I'm not."
"Cookson will crack before Piper does!"
"Do you ever let up?"
"No, but I'll tell you something..."
"What?"
|
"You're prettier when you're angry!" Rosie's not impressed.
"I'll call you when I'm finished. You can come and pick me up."
"Whatever you say, Rosebud. You do your bit..." She slams the car door. "...and I'll do mine."
Ed drives off, and unfortunately for Rosie, Mr Piper's not in. An elderly neighbour tells her that Mr Piper's family left him years ago, because he wouldn't let go of his son's death. Rosie's surprised at this.
|
Meanwhile Eddie's round at Barton Street. He needs a mate of his to help him with a little problem...
|
Rosie's finished at Piper's. She radios Ed and isn't best pleased to find he's got his radio off.
Eddie's mate is knocking on Cookson's door. He tells him to move his van, as the gas board's going to do some work in the street, and if the van's blocking their way, it'll be towed.
|
Just as Cookson starts his van, though, Eddie appears and asks him to take a breath test.
