Rod wishes Rosie luck. Eddie, Liz, Chris and Hadfield are all squashed into the back of an unmarked white van with all the surveillance gear. Ed has the binoculars.
As Rosie walks through the restaurant, she passes two other undercover officers who are there to help her if things go awry. Bellman and Ruzhkov are in a corner. Bellman stands up to greet her.
"You made it." He makes the introductions. Ruzhkov offers Rosie a seat and a glass of wine.
"I've got to be back at my office later this evening, so if it's okay, I'd like to get straight done to business," Ruzhkov tells her.
"Sure. We're talking about a job." Bellman makes his excuses and leaves the pair of them to talk.
"Clive tells me you are a smart girl. No trouble with the law, no criminal record. Is that right?"
"That's right."
"Good. Have you got a drug habit?"
"No."
"Everybody does something."
"Smoke a bit of grass, have a drink..."
"Speak any languages?"
"English, just about. Schoolgirl French."
"It's not essential."
"Can I ask a question? What's the job?"
"International courier."
"And what am I couriering?" Unfortunately, Bellman interrupts them at that point. A police officer's been spotted.
|
"What?" Eddie's worried about Rosie's safety.
Ruzhkov decides that they'll go to his offices in a bit.
"What's happening?" Rosie asks.
"Where's his office?" Ed asks DI Hadfield.
"Docklands." Liz puts the other units on standby.
"She's sounds jumpy," says Eddie, as he listens to Rosie asking Ruzhkov whether he really thinks she should go with him.
"What happens if she goes with Ruzhkov?" says Deakin.
The operation's not at Ed's main concern. "What happens if he's sussed her?"
"It doesn't sound like he has. We'll blow this job if we go in now." Deakin's concerned about Rosie's safety too, and says that they need to make a decision. "I've made mine, Chris," Hadfield tells him. They're going to carry on until Rosie calls for help.
Eddie watches Bellman going over to his car.
Inside, Ruzhkov's preparing to leave.
|
"I'd like to know the bottom line, Mr Ruzhkov."
"Bottom line?"
"What am I crossing international borders with and what do I get for it," she says bluntly.
"Highly valuable substances."
"I don't want to be taken for an idiot."
"Nor do I."
Ruzhkov's wants to leave immediately. "Unless I know exactly what I'm being employed to carry and where I'm going, I'm leaving now, Mr Ruzhkov."
He thinks for a moment. "Heroin from Budapest. £1000 a trip, plus clothes and expenses. You can think about it on the way to my office." They both get up to leave, but Ed stops them at the door. Ruzhkov runs out a different way, straight into other officers. Meanwhile Ed pretends to arrest Rosie. (What's the point when Bellman would have realised that as Ed was undercover as Rosie's boyfriend, so she would have been in on it too?)
Outside Bellman's shouting abuse at Rosebud, as they all get into the cars.
|
Everyone's enjoying themselves at the post-op party, and it seems like they've all have quite a lot to drink. Ed and Rosie are flirting with each other. He's telling her that he's enjoyed working with her.
"You never stop, do you," she laughs.
"Stop what?"
"Taking the mick."
He laughs, "I'm dead serious."
"You're never really serious about anything are you, Eddie?"
"I'm serious about you," he says rather more seriously.
"Since when?"
"I mean it." She tells him to go and get her another drink. "You're wish is my..."
"Stop. You wear me out just listening to you wittering on."
Some of the SERCs officers are discussing the evidence with Chris and Rod. They say that they would like to get Bellman's cooperation.
"Well send Rosie in. She'd roll him over in seconds," Ed tells them.
|
Deakin then gets the idea of proposing a toast to Eddie and Rosie. "They may not have seen eye to eye at the start, but I'm sure you'd all agree, they make the perfect couple."
"Then lets see them kiss and make up" slurs Rod.
"Bog off!" Rosie tells him, but the others start egging them on so he agrees...
...So Ed gets to enjoy a nice long kiss with Rosie, whilst Rod decides this is the perfect photo opportunity and uses up the rest of the film in the camera.
"I'm lost for words," Ed tells her as the others are cheering.
"Never!" Rosie goes for a talk with Liz, and Chris Deakin declares that he needs the toilet.
"Is this the start of something new, then?" Liz asks her.
"Probably not." She watches Ed and Rod mess around. "I'm completely exhausted."
"I'm not surprised."
"It's fun though." I'm not sure whether she's referring to undercover work or being around Eddie. Either way, she decides to call it a night.
"Be back about nine for the debrief tomorrow."
|
Rosie's getting changed in the women's locker-room when there's a knock at the door. Ed comes in.
"What are you up to now?" she smiles.
"Thought we could do something later."
"Like what, Ed? Game of crazy golf?"
"No, I want more of those kinda kisses."
"Well, not tonight though. I'm about to pass out on my feet."
He puts his arms around her. "I won't let you fall."
She looks at him in amazement. "You really take liberties, don't you Ed."
"I'm a man possessed with desire, Rosebud. I can't sleep at night."
"Well, I can."
"So teach me."
"Teach you what?"
"Take me home. Show me how you do it."
She bites her lip and shakes her head. "Goodnight, Ed!"
He asks for one more kiss, and she agrees.
|
Then things get out of hand. He pushes her up against the lockers and then to the floor. Rosie tries to push him off, though not with a lot of force. Suddenly there's some noise form the corridor outside so Ed stops. Furious, Rosie gets up, puts her trousers on, grabs her bag and leaves.
