DEEP END : Part 2
Rosie's back at the station but is still one PC Santini short. She goes to grab a coffee, but Vicky's there.
"Seen Eddie?"
"He's in custody with a prisoner." Vicky slams the machine. "It's supposed to be a new machine."
"I think it's 20ps only."
Vicky glances down, and finds that Rosie's right. She hasn't got any, so walks off in a bit of a huff. Rosie just gives her a funny look.
|
Meanwhile in custody, Cookson's shouting abuse at Eddie as Sgt. Boyden shuts him in a cell. As Eddie walks up the corridor, Rosie sees him.
"I want a word." She sees the empty interview room. "In here."
Eddie's still not taking her seriously. "Be gentle with Rosebud!"
"It's Rosie." She really isn't pleased! "Where've you been? I had to walk all the way back from the Pipers."
"Sorry. I was busy doing police work."
"So which of Britain's most wanted did you manage to notch up while I was away?"
"Just the one drink driver."
"Fantastic work!"
Eddie pretends not to notice the sarcasm. "Well, it wasn't hard. I spotted Cookson getting into his van with that skinful he had earlier..."
"You what?!?" she interrupts him. "He'll lose his job. They could have him back inside and you know that."
"Yeah, shame!"
"What were you doing over at Cookson's anyway?"
"Taking a leaf out of your book, Rosebud. I was going to have a word with him."
"You set him up?"
|
Eddie smiles. "He set himself up."
"You bastard!"
"My friends usually call me "clever bastard"!"
"You're just unbelievable!"
"Wait till you get to know me."
"You really fancy yourself, don't you Eddie!"
"I fancy you more." He crosses the room towards her. "Look at those smoldering eyes."
"Piss off!"
"Whatever you say Rosebud. You wish is ever my command!"
Eddie walks off. A couple of seconds later Rosie follows and bumps into Liz.
|
"Rosie, I was just looking for you."
"Hi, sorry Liz. I haven't had time to come and say hello, yet."
"Actually, I wanted to talk to you about a job. I know it's your first day, but we need a new face for some undercover work. Thought you might be interested."
"Yeah, great, I would."
"We're planning to ask Eddie Santini to partner you on it."
"Eddie?"
Liz spots the look on Rosie's face. "Is that a problem?"
"No." Rosie forces a smile. "Well. Nothing I can't handle anyway."
|
Eddie's boasting to Dave in the canteen.
"Guess what I've just be offered."
"Don't accept it. It'll be illegal."
"No, it's not a moody VCR. It's a CID job; undercover; and it gets better...It's going to be me and Rosebud working in perfect harmony."
"I thought you didn't like her."
"I'm keeping my options open."
"She doesn't like you."
|
Ed laughs at this. "That's just the way some girls like to play it. Pretend they hate you when they're gagging for it."
"What the infinite mysteries of womankind?"
"Yeah." He stops for a second. "I wouldn't mind unraveling a few of Rosebud's."
"Go for it."
"Yeah, I will, Dave. I will."
It's the next day, rather windy, and Rosie's out for a run in the park. She jogs over to her bike, which is chained to fence, to get a bottle of water. Ed gets out of his car.
"Morning, Rosebud. How's the neck?"
"Fine, why?"
"Well it's holding up that brain all day. It must be a strain."
"Very funny. You just passing?"
"Yeah, been to get the scratches looked at on the motor. You got your bike sorted out, then?"
"Yeah, it's fine."
"Fancy a coffee?" Rosie declines as she's too hot and quite busy. "Look, I can understand you being wound up about yesterday..." he begins.
"I'm not wound up!" she quickly protests.
"But, I want you to know it's going to be team work all the way on this job."
"What makes it different from yesterday?"
"Why don't we forget about yesterday and start at year zero?"
"Alright, Ed. Year zero."
"Now how do you fancy a drink?"
"Still got things to do!" she laughs in a singsong voice as she gets on her bike. "See you later!"
|
The relief are just arriving. In the yard Tom and Rod are loading up a van with decorating and surveillance equipment. Vicky's not too pleased that Rosie's been chosen instead of her.
"They needed a new face," reasons Luke.
"Well I'm not exactly part of the furniture around here."
"You never get recognized by the wool you're pulling in any case," says Debbie. "Is this a new look you're sporting Rod?"
"Why do I always get the rubbish ops?" he moans. Liz arrives to tell them that Mr and Mrs Jolliffe are very enthusiastic. "I prefer the ones that disappear leave you to it myself."
|
Rosie arrives and is greeted by Tom. "Hi, sorry. I've forgotten you name. I met so many people yesterday."
"I'm Tom." She nods are goes inside.
"See you later, Rosie!" Rod calls after her, before turning to make fun of Tom. "Have you decided what role Eddie's playing yet?" Rosie asks Liz. "I assume I'll be taking a room at this hostel."
"That's the idea eventually. The DI was thinking about a tom-pimp relationship. That way, once you're established on the plot, Eddie can come and go as we please."
"Sounds sensible." She hesitates for a moment. "Are sure I'm up to this Liz?" Liz reassures her that she'll be okay.
|
Tom and Rod have arrived at the obbo. Rod's still in a bad mood. "I can't stand painting...My shoulder always plays up when I do the rolling!"
"What's this? A bad hair day?" They are met at the door by Bruce Jolliffe. He and his wife were getting the decorator sin soon anyway, so it is was an ideal cover for CID.
Inside, they watch Bellman take one of the prostitutes off in his car, from the window.
"Who's the girl?" wonders Rod aloud.
"Dunno, but she doesn't look very happy," replies Tom as he films it with the video camera.
|
Rosie's busy reading her book in the canteen, while she and Eddie wait to be called in by the DI.
"This is boring." Eddie watches her when she didn't respond. "What's the book about?"
"It's a bit difficult to explain..."
"...To someone with only four GCEs." He gets up to get another cup of tea. Exasperated, Rosie carries on reading. Sgt. Boyden approaches Ed and asks whether he's "made it up with Rosie" after yesterday. "Yeah, we're cool. There could even be a tiny spark of interest flying my way," Ed confides.
"I wouldn't count on it. She told me yesterday that she normally doesn't go out with her workmates."
"And what made her volunteer that information?"
"You're not the only bloke in this nick capable of trying it on."
"She's not likely to end up as the station bike. You know, Cambridge girl: she's used to picking and choosing."
Matt tells him that she's hardly going to give that impression undercover, as she's a tom: "One of Brim Street's finest."
"No, it's not her style."
"It's amazing how adaptable women can be."
Ed's not too pleased now as he goes back and sits down with Rosie.
"What was all that about?"
"Nothing."
"It didn't look like nothing. Were you talking about me?"
"Not everything revolves around you, Rosebud!"
